Computer network

The network computer is groups of computers connected by a wiring structure or via a wireless system that allows them to share files and services with each other. To achieve good performance of these networks, it is necessary to have several devices to connect and link our network with other networks and offer a much more secure and efficient communication system.

Modems

Popular modems are devices that have the important function of communicating the computer equipment that is part of a network with the outside world. It is the device where the main network cable is connected and receives the information from the line telephone. These devices can connect to multiple networks.

The operation of the modems is simple. The transmitting computer or network sends digital signals converted to analog signals in the transmitting modem and travel through telephone lines to their destination. The receiving modem converts the analog signal back into a digital signal that a computer can interpret.

The modem has a serial communication interface (RS-232) and an RJ-11 telephone line interface. Data transmission speeds for today’s modems range from 57,500 bps to 76,800 bps.

Hubs

Another primary device for networking is the Hub. This device allows us to expand the network to as many computers as we want, using the star point topology, which consists of dividing the network point into as many outputs as the Hub has.

Hubs receive data through the input connection and offer various outputs to connect to multiple computers. In most networks, we can join Hubs in series to increase the amount of equipment secured in a network.

Repeaters

When signals are transmitted over cables, they tend to degrade as they go further. This phenomenon can also be seen in wireless networks. Fortunately, there is an answer to this situation, which is to use famous repeaters.

These devices take the distorted signal from a cable or signal and regenerate it to transmit the network signal or data too much more remote locations, using the OSI reference model.

The repeaters can only work on signals or data packets that work with the same communication protocols. It will be impossible for a repeater to improve the sign of an Ethernet network and send it to a Token Ring network.

Repeaters are devices that must be used to join remote segments of a LAN. These do not perform any filtering or re-addressing; they only connect network segments and restore degraded signals.

Bridges

Bridges are devices that have a very similar purpose to repeaters, but unlike repeaters, they can divide a network to isolate a wing from it and carry out the required repairs.

Bridges are generally used to:

Extend the length of a network segment.

Increase the number of computers on a network.

Reduce the bottleneck effect of a network.

Split overloaded networks.

Link physical media

Routers

The routers are perhaps the best-known network devices. These devices have the particularity of carrying out a bridge offering a series of extra benefits, such as the possibility of determining the fastest way to send data through the network and, of course, filtering traffic in a particular network segment.

These devices can switch and route the information packets transmitted through the information exchange network of communication protocols.

There are different types of routers, static, dynamic and broadcast. They can work with cables or wirelessly, increasing the range of these devices that manage all the information that passes to a network segment.

Brouter

Brouters are a hybrid between router and bridge, working as one type of device or another, according to the network segment where you are working.

Gateway

These devices enable communication between architectures and environments and perform the packaging and conversion of data packets to be transmitted over a network.
